The following mele was composed by Anthony (Tony) La`akapu-a-Kawailani Lenchanko for John Louis Kea (Rev 2009). It was included by Kumu Hula Leimomi Ho as a part of the Hawaiian contingency to Father Damien's canonization, Vatican City, Vatican (Rome, Italy). We as 'ohana should be very proud that the spirit of our kupuna played a part on this great and sacred day.

A Song of the Lei of Love
na La'akapu-a-Kawailani ©
In throngs the completely abandoned arrive
Laden with tears
Enshrouded in mist appears ahead
The life foundation of this here land of Hina
Searching at Cape
For the waters that glisten the cliff
The lehua is suitable in the Kaua'ula rain
Soaked is the verdant growth
Moloka'i is adorned with the lei kukui
Sweetly fragrant blossom to be cherished
A gift of affection never to be forgotten
Held tightly in peaceful love
Unending compassion for that beloved one
Protected, life given, with Li'a-wahine
This fond remembrance for the lei of love
Buoyant in the heavenly waters
Long endure the lei of love in the enlightenment
